Privacy and Terms of Service

This document applies to PDF Redactor, a browser extension published by Smart Build Labs. By installing or using PDF Redactor, you agree to this Privacy Policy and these Terms of Service.

Privacy Policy

In short

  • Your PDFs are opened, redacted and saved on your computer. They are never uploaded to us or to anyone else.
  • There is no account, no advertising, no analytics and no tracking.
  • Two optional features use the internet, and neither one sends your PDFs or their text: the Local AI model download, and the Pro license check.

What PDF Redactor does

PDF Redactor finds private information in PDF files, such as emails, phone numbers and card numbers, lets you mark anything else, and permanently removes the marked content from a new copy of the file. It runs inside your Chrome browser.

Your PDFs and what’s in them

  • Where they come from. You can drop a file onto the redactor, or click the PDF Redactor icon (or “Redact this PDF” in the right-click menu) on a PDF you’re viewing. In the second case, the extension downloads that PDF again from the same website, the same way your browser does when you view it, including your login for that site so private documents open too.
  • How they’re processed. Reading, finding, redacting and checking all happen in your browser, on your computer. The optional Local AI runs on your computer as well. Smart Build Labs never receives your PDFs, their text, their images or their file names.
  • Brief local storage. When you open a PDF from the icon or menu, its bytes are kept in the extension’s own browser storage just long enough for the redactor tab to open it, then deleted. Anything left over is deleted automatically after one hour.
  • Your files. The redacted copy is saved where your browser saves downloads. Your original file is not changed.
  • Passwords. If a PDF is password-protected, the password you type is used only to open that file on your computer. It is never stored or sent anywhere.

Data stored on your computer

PDF Redactor uses Chrome’s extension storage to remember:

  • your settings (look of the boxes, which finders are on, theme, layout, Local AI options);
  • your “Never suggest” list: words you chose never to have suggested again (you can remove them in Settings);
  • how many of your 3 free Pro PDFs you have used, as a count and random IDs, with no file names or content;
  • if you buy Pro, your plan, your email and your subscription status, so Pro keeps working offline;
  • if you turn on Local AI, the AI model files (about 810 MB).

This data stays in your browser. Uninstalling the extension removes it, except for the synced data described next.

Data that leaves your computer

  1. Chrome sync. If you have Chrome sync turned on, Chrome syncs the free-PDF count, and ExtensionPay’s install date and license key described below, to your other computers through your Google Account. This is handled by Google under Google’s Privacy Policy. You can delete synced data from your Google Account’s Chrome sync settings.
  2. Local AI model download (optional, off by default). When you turn on Local AI, PDF Redactor downloads the OpenAI Privacy Filter model files once from Hugging Face (huggingface.co). Like any download, Hugging Face receives standard request information such as your IP address. No information about you or your documents is sent. After the download, Local AI works offline.
  3. Pro purchases and license check (optional). Pro is sold through ExtensionPay, which uses Stripe for payments. Nothing is sent until you open “See plans” or “Restore purchase”. From then on, PDF Redactor sends ExtensionPay a random license key to ask whether you have Pro. On ExtensionPay’s own page you enter your email and payment details; card details go to Stripe and are never seen by PDF Redactor or by Smart Build Labs. ExtensionPay tells the extension whether you have paid, your plan, your email and your subscription status. Smart Build Labs can see buyers’ emails and plans in ExtensionPay’s dashboard to provide support.

Nothing else is sent. PDF Redactor contains no analytics, advertising or crash-reporting code.

What we don’t do

  • We don’t sell, rent or share your data, and we don’t use it for advertising.
  • We don’t use or transfer data for anything other than redacting your PDFs and providing Pro.
  • We don’t use or transfer data to determine creditworthiness or for lending.
  • No person at Smart Build Labs reads your documents. We never receive them.

PDF Redactor’s use of data complies with the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.

Permissions

  • storage: to save the settings and status listed above on your computer.
  • activeTab: to read the PDF in the current tab, only after you click the PDF Redactor icon or menu item.
  • contextMenus: to add “Redact this PDF” to the right-click menu.
  • Site access (optional): not granted at install. If you open a PDF from a link on another site, Chrome asks you to allow access to that one site, only to download that PDF. PDF Redactor never reads or changes web pages.

Keeping and deleting your data

  • Remove words from your “Never suggest” list in Settings at any time.
  • Uninstalling PDF Redactor deletes its settings, cached Pro status and AI model files from your computer.
  • Synced data can be deleted from your Google Account’s Chrome sync settings.
  • To delete your Pro purchase record (email and plan), email us at the address below and we’ll help you remove it from ExtensionPay. Your payment records held by Stripe follow Stripe’s privacy policy.

Security

Your documents are processed only on your computer, so there is no server copy of them to protect or to leak. Requests to Hugging Face and ExtensionPay use HTTPS.

Children

PDF Redactor is not directed at children under 13 (or the minimum age in your jurisdiction). Do not use the extension if you are not old enough to agree to these terms where you live.

Changes to this Privacy Policy

We may update this policy from time to time. The “Last updated” date below will reflect material changes. Continued use of the extension after changes means you accept the updated policy.

Terms of Service

License to use

Subject to these terms, Smart Build Labs grants you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to install and use PDF Redactor in accordance with its documentation and the Chrome Web Store listing.

Acceptable use

You agree not to misuse PDF Redactor, including by attempting to interfere with the extension’s security, reverse engineer it to circumvent technical limitations in violation of applicable law, or use it for unlawful purposes.

Your responsibility for redactions

PDF Redactor deletes the content you mark and checks the result, but automatic suggestions, including Local AI, can miss information or flag information that isn’t private. You are responsible for reviewing every page of the redacted file before you share it, and for deciding whether the result meets your legal, professional or regulatory obligations. PDF Redactor is a tool, not legal advice, and using it does not by itself make you compliant with any law or rule (for example HIPAA, GDPR, or court redaction rules).

Disclaimers

PDF Redactor is provided “as is” to the maximum extent permitted by law. We do not warrant that the extension will find or remove every piece of sensitive information or that it will be error-free.

Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Smart Build Labs and its contributors will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for loss of profits, data, or goodwill, arising from your use of PDF Redactor, including from information that was not redacted.

Pro and paid features

Every Pro feature is free on your first 3 PDFs. After that, Pro is an optional purchase through ExtensionPay. Plans, prices, billing, renewal and refund terms are shown at the point of purchase and govern that transaction. You can manage or cancel a subscription from “Manage plan” in the extension. If a subscription ends, PDF Redactor keeps working with its free features.

Termination

You may stop using PDF Redactor at any time by removing the extension. We may stop offering or updating the extension; if we do, your local data may remain in your browser until you remove it.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws applicable in your primary place of business or residence as determined by Smart Build Labs’ policies in effect at the time, except where mandatory consumer protections apply in your country.

Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms of Service. Continued use of PDF Redactor after the updated terms are posted constitutes acceptance of the changes.
